STUCK
I KNEW I WAS DIFFERENT WHEN I WAS ABOUT 6 YRS OLD…I’M NOW 25 AND VERY OPENLY GAY AMONG MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THE BIG PROBLEM IS WORK! IM NOT OPEN AT WORK 🙁 I’M 25 AND I DON’T HAVE THE BALLS TO SAY I’M GAY! I AM ACCOUNTANT AT A VERY SMALL FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS…THEY EXPECT ALOT FROM ME AND I’VE KNOWN THEM FOR YEARS (SINCE I WAS 12) I NEVER THOUGHT EVER; NEVER EVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE WORKING FOR THEM IN THE FUTURE..ITS LIKE I FINISHED H.S. THEN WENT TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE FINISHED TRANSFERRED AND THEN JUST BOOM! IM STUCK! NEVER FINISHED MY BS …5YRS LATER AND I’M HERE STUCK AT THE CHRISTIAN NATION OF GAY BASHERS SOCIETY WHO DON’T EVEN HAVE ANY IDEA THAT IM GAY! I HEAR CONSTANT HATEFUL REMARKS , I’VE SPOKEN UP FOR GAY RIGHTS A FEW TIMES AND ALL HELL BROKE LOSE, I’M TIRED THO, I CAN’T LIVE MY LIFE OR WORK WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE SO NEGATIVE AND MISERABLE WITH THEIR LIVES THEY HAVE TO PREACH HATE…I’M RAMBLING CAUSE WHEN I SAY I’M STUCK IS..I HAVE A GOOD JOB, I PAY MY RENT, MY CAR AND BILLS …IF I QUIT ITS A RISK OF LOSING MY “SECURITY” FOR ME AND MY PARTNER…I GUESS IM SAYING IS WHAT WOULD YOU DO? WOULD YOU JUST DROP YOUR JOB? COME OUT AT WORK? (EVEN KNOWING THEY ARE ANTI-GAY?) I FEEL ASHAMED FOR HIDING AT WORK, THAT’S RIDICULOUS AND I CAN’T BELIEVE I’VE BEEN HIDING FOR 5 YRS…I CANT ANYMORE…IM GONNA HAVE TO QUIT OR COME OUT….CONFUSED..FEELING STUCK! ANY ADVICE? Annie, If you feel so strongly about who you are so much you want to come out at work, then I say go for it only if you are ready for the consequences that follow. The worst thing that could happen is them discriminating and you lose your job over that… Which as long as you dont voluntarily quit or are terminated based on your work performance, you are pretty much protected against losing everything such as a portion of your income.. That being said, would give you prime opportunity to finish your BS that you unselfishly put on hold for the company you are with… Now, on the other hand if you were to come out, they may accept the fact you are.. Its funny how some people think its ok for you to be gay, but others its totally disgusting.. Just know you have options either way. And everything happens for a reason. I dont think you should be in a miserable workplace just because of narrowminded people. Just be real with yourself. Good luck, and let us know what happens. xx
